CONCEPT

What is a regular pentagon?

A regular pentagon is a five-sided polygon in which all five sides have the same length and all five interior angles are equal. Its geometry is especially useful because the diagonal is connected to the golden ratio.

Key fact: every interior angle of a regular pentagon is 108°, the interior-angle sum is 540°, and five equal triangles can be formed by joining the centre to the vertices.

The calculator uses one known dimension to reconstruct the full regular-pentagon geometry.

Five equal sides

P = 5a

The perimeter is simply five times the side length.

Five equal angles

108°

Each interior angle is 108°, so the five angles total 540°.

FORMULAS

Regular Pentagon Formulas

Let a be the side length. These are the core relationships used by the calculator.

Area: A = a²√(25 + 10√5) / 4
A
area of the pentagon
a
side length
Perimeter: P = 5a
Diagonal: d = φa = a(1 + √5)/2
φ
golden ratio, approximately 1.618034
d
diagonal length
Height: h = a√(5 + 2√5) / 2
Circumradius: R = a / [2 sin(36°)]
Apothem: r = a / [2 tan(36°)]
Why 36° appears: joining the centre to the five vertices divides the full 360° around the centre into five equal central angles, so each central angle is 72°. Splitting one of those triangles in half gives 36°.

GOLDEN RATIO

Why the diagonal uses φ

Draw all five diagonals of a regular pentagon and they form a pentagram. The intersections divide the diagonals into segments that repeat the same geometric proportion. That proportion is the golden ratio, φ = (1 + √5) / 2.

φgolden ratio
The pentagram is one of the classic geometric appearances of the golden ratio.
EXAMPLES

Worked Pentagon Examples

Example 01 · Side given

Side a = 10 cm

The perimeter is five sides:

P = 5 × 10 = 50 cm

The diagonal is:

d = φ × 10 ≈ 16.180 cm

The area is:

A = 10²√(25+10√5)/4 ≈ 172.048 cm²
A ≈ 172.048 cm²
Example 02 · Area given

Area A = 172.048 cm²

Rearrange the area formula to recover the side:

a = √(A / 1.720477)

For this example:

a ≈ √(172.048 / 1.720477) ≈ 10 cm
a ≈ 10 cm
Example 03 · Perimeter given

Perimeter P = 75 cm

a = P / 5 = 75 / 5 = 15 cm
d = 15φ ≈ 24.271 cm
a = 15 cm
Example 04 · Diagonal given

Diagonal d = 20 cm

a = d / φ ≈ 20 / 1.618034 ≈ 12.361 cm
a ≈ 12.361 cm
PROPERTIES

Important Pentagon Properties

  • Number of sides: 5.
  • Interior-angle sum: (5 − 2) × 180° = 540°.
  • Each interior angle: 540° / 5 = 108°.
  • Central angle: 360° / 5 = 72°.
  • Symmetry: a regular pentagon has five lines of reflection symmetry and rotational symmetry of order 5.
  • Golden ratio: the diagonal-to-side ratio is φ ≈ 1.618034.
  • Area construction: the pentagon can be divided into five congruent isosceles triangles from its centre.
COMMON MISTAKES

Common Pentagon Calculation Mistakes

Confusing height and apothem

The height runs between opposite parallel support lines of the regular pentagon. The apothem is the perpendicular distance from the centre to a side. They are different quantities.

Using the diagonal as the side

The diagonal is longer than the side by a factor of φ. If d is known, recover the side with a = d/φ before using the area formula.

Mixing area and length units

If the side is expressed in cm, area is in cm². Changing a length unit by a factor changes area by the square of that factor.

Using a non-regular pentagon formula

These compact formulas assume all five sides and all five angles are equal. An arbitrary five-sided polygon needs more information.

FAQ

Pentagon Calculator FAQ

What is a regular pentagon?

It is a five-sided polygon with five equal sides and five equal interior angles of 108°.

What is the formula for the area of a regular pentagon?

For side length a, A = a²√(25 + 10√5) / 4. Equivalently, area can be written as one-half of perimeter times apothem.

How do I find the diagonal from the side?

Multiply the side by the golden ratio: d = φa, where φ ≈ 1.618034.

What is the difference between the circumradius and apothem?

The circumradius R is the distance from the centre to a vertex. The apothem r is the perpendicular distance from the centre to a side.

Can I calculate the pentagon if I only know its perimeter?

Yes. For a regular pentagon, a = P/5. The calculator then derives the other dimensions.

Can these formulas be used for any pentagon?

No. The formulas on this page are for a regular pentagon. An irregular pentagon may have unequal sides and angles.
